Product Description
Galvanized steel strand is a type of metallic wire made by twisting multiple high-strength steel wires together and then applying a galvanizing treatment. It combines high strength, flexibility, and excellent corrosion resistance, making it widely used in various fields such as power, telecommunications, construction, and transportation. Below is an introduction covering its structure, properties, classification, and applications.
Basic Structure
The core structure of galvanized steel strands consists of two parts.
Steel wire: Made by drawing high-carbon steel (such as high-quality carbon structural steel), each individual wire boasts high tensile strength, forming the foundation for the load-bearing capacity of steel strands.
Stranded Structure: Multiple steel wires are twisted together according to a specific lay direction (left-hand or right-hand lay) and pitch, forming a single, cohesive wire. Common strand configurations include 7-strand, 19-strand designs, and more (e.g., 7×7 indicates 7 individual wires grouped into one strand, with a total of 7 such strands twisted together). This stranded design enhances the wire's flexibility and ensures even distribution of stress across the entire structure, making it easier to bend and install.
Galvanized Coating: After stranding, the steel wire rope is coated with a zinc layer using either hot-dip or electro-galvanizing processes. This zinc layer effectively isolates the wire from corrosive elements such as air and moisture, protecting the internal steel wires from rust and significantly extending the product's service life.
Key Performance Features
1. High Strength: Thanks to the material properties of high-carbon steel wire and the synergistic effect of its stranded structure, galvanized steel strands exhibit exceptionally high tensile strength (typically reaching 1170 MPa or higher), enabling them to withstand significant tensile loads—making them ideal for use as load-bearing or traction components.
2. Excellent Flexibility: After multiple steel wires are twisted together, the cable can bend moderately, making it easy to transport, deploy, and install. It can also adapt to wiring needs in various scenarios—such as crossing uneven terrain or being wrapped and secured for stable installation.
3. Corrosion Resistance: The galvanized coating acts as a sacrificial anode, protecting the inner steel wires through its own corrosion. Even if the zinc layer is locally damaged, it can still slow down the rusting process of the steel wires. Moreover, the zinc layer formed by hot-dip galvanizing is thicker and has stronger adhesion, offering superior corrosion resistance compared to electro-galvanizing—making it the ideal choice for long-term outdoor use.
4. Stability: The structure is robust and resistant to deformation under conditions such as temperature fluctuations and vibrations, ensuring long-term maintenance of consistent mechanical performance and guaranteeing the safety of the project.
Common Categories
By the number of steel wires per strand: these can be categorized into 7-wire steel strands (commonly used, such as 7×1.8mm), 19-wire steel strands (more flexible, ideal for applications requiring frequent bending), and so on. The greater the number of wires in a strand, the better its flexibility—but the manufacturing process becomes more complex.
By galvanizing process:
Hot-dip galvanized steel strands: These are created by immersing steel strands into molten zinc, forming a thick zinc coating (typically ≥85 μm) that offers excellent corrosion resistance. They are ideal for harsh outdoor environments, such as power lines and bridge cables.
Electrogalvanized steel strand: A zinc layer is deposited on the surface via electrolysis. This zinc coating is relatively thin (typically ≤15 μm) and comes at a lower cost, making it suitable for indoor environments with mild corrosivity or for short-term applications.
By application, they can be categorized into galvanized steel strands for power transmission, galvanized steel strands for telecommunications, galvanized steel strands for construction, and more. Products designed for different purposes may feature targeted designs in aspects such as wire strength and strand-twining methods.
Primary Application Scenarios
Power Industry: As the core material for overhead ground wires (lightning protection lines)—as mentioned earlier—this material leverages its high strength and corrosion resistance to be suspended atop transmission line towers, providing effective lightning protection. It can also be used for tasks such as tensioning power lines and securing towers.
Telecommunications Industry: Used for supporting and pulling communication lines, such as guy wires that secure optical cables and power cables, ensuring stable line installation.
Architecture and Transportation: Used as stay cables and prestressed components in bridges and high-rise buildings; serving as reinforcing elements in guardrails and isolation nets for highways and railways, thereby enhancing structural strength.
Agriculture and Fisheries: Used for greenhouse frames, supporting lines for fishing nets, and more—offering weather resistance that meets the demands of outdoor applications.
The Difference from Related Materials
Compared to ordinary steel strands: galvanized steel strands feature an added zinc coating, significantly enhancing their corrosion resistance and extending their service life—making them especially suitable for outdoor environments that are prone to corrosion, such as humid, foggy, or coastal areas.
Compared to steel wire ropes: Both are made by twisting multiple steel wires together, but steel strands prioritize tensile strength, with their wire material and twisting method emphasizing direct-force loading. In contrast, steel wire ropes typically include a core, focusing more on wear resistance and repeated bending performance—making them ideal for dynamic load applications such as lifting and towing.
In summary, galvanized steel strands, with their combined advantages of "high strength + corrosion resistance + flexibility," have become a critical material for bearing loads, providing secure anchoring, and offering protective functions across multiple industries. Their versatile performance makes them indispensable in outdoor projects and long-term applications.
